When you create a digital personal brand, you get to control the narrative. The first entries on any search engine will become what you put out into the world (your website, social media, etc.).

You get to lay out your values and expertise, often attracting opportunities. When that happens, it just feels like luck. Until you zoom out and see how often it does happen.

Why build a personal brand?

As AI’s influence grows and more jobs are lost, personal brands will become even more important. Think the three Cs:

  1. Career: Demonstrate your ambition and ingenuity, increasing the likelihood of promotion, a new role, and industry opportunities.
  2. Credibility: Build trust and social proof demonstrating your knowledge, expertise and experience.
  3. Competitive advantage: Stand out from the crowd and position yourself as an expert. (You don’t need to know much more than most people to become an expert.) Become a go-to person in your industry.

How to build a personal brand

People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. So, get really clear about why you do what you do.

  1. Find your why: Think about your expertise, experience, passions and values. What is your personal USP?
  2. Define your values: Identify what you stand for and what defines your reputation. What beliefs guide your actions?
  3. Create or audit your online presence: Make your social media reflect your values and professional goals.
  4. Create content on the digital channels that play to your strengths, whether it’s writing or appearing on video. And be consistent.
